Are you over 16? Yes
Characters Played Here: Rex and Dr. Whale
Character: St. John Allerdyce / Pyro
Series/Canon: X-Men: Evolution
From When? After Magneto gets blown the fuck up or whatever and Pyro decides he has nothing better to do than watch it on loop over and over again because it's funny. THIS SCENE.
History: Nothing much is known about St. John Allerdyce's childhood. Born in Sydney, Australia, he was likely raised in a fairly normal middle class family. When his abilities manifested around the age of 15, he mostly utilized them for pranks and petty acts of criminality. While he was never a full-fledged delinquent, St. John skirted the line of "bad boy." Easygoing and affable, with a love for being the center of attention, he didn't have a hard time making friends, despite the fact that he was a bit of a weirdo with an obsession with fire. St. John was a creative type, and he excelled in English writing and literature classes, but tended to skate by on the bare minimum with everything else. Despite his talent, he often settled for churning out quick, crappy-- but entertaining-- stories. St. John was more the next R. L. Stine than he was the next James Joyce (whom he hated, anyway).
By the time he was 17/18, he never quite grew out of his troublemaking tendencies. A prank gone wrong ended in a fire that destroyed the restaurant he had been working in, injuring seven people, but thankfully killing nobody. This caught the attention of both the police, who were going to charge him with arson, and Magneto, who offered the young man a way out from his legal woes.
It didn't take much to sell the Acolytes to St. John-- who was now known as Pyro. While he never quite bought into Magneto's ideals of mutant supremacy, the Acolytes offered him the opportunity to truly relish his abilities, to use them without consequence. He practiced use of his abilities, growing from a prankster to a force to be reckoned with, truly earning his place amongst the elite team.
From there, see the Wiki from Season 2 - 4.
Personality: Pyro is the sort who takes joy in the little things, like fire, and more importantly, setting things... and people... and places on fire. You'll know this by the ever-present cackle lets loose whenever he's indulging in a bit of arson. It's fun to him; it entertains him. He is positively jovial when he's lighting things up, and he doesn't care who gets caught in his path. In fact, if people do get caught in his path? All the better! He'll just laugh harder. Everything's a giant joke to him, which is why, even though he follows Magneto, it's clear that he's only in it for the chance to use his powers recklessly and cause loads of damage. Pyro isn't a true believer in the party line, and it's made apparent by the fact that when Magneto's taken out by Apocalypse, he finds it hiiiiiilarious and reacts with no loyalty to the man whatsoever, instead taking joy in rewinding a video clip of Magneto being defeated over and over again.
St. John is incredibly outgoing, generally manic and giddy, and is talkative to the point of obnoxiousness. He'll just keep going after people have already left the room or stopped talking to him. He can be witty, if you consider puns witty, but people don't tend to find him particularly funny because he’s really just a jerk. Due to his general demeanor (and the fact that his moral compass is flimsy, at best), St. John can come across as having no concern for anybody but himself. He thinks cartoon-like violence is quite hilarious, when it happens to other people, and he tends to put “roasting folks” in the same category as “cartoon-like.” Although he's far from evil, his sense of empathy is stunted, and he really doesn't seem to give a damn when others get hurt-- in fact, he laughs. However, it's likely more to do with the fact that he doesn't really take anything all that seriously than it is genuine sadism on his part. After all, if he were a true sadist, he would have actually injured somebody with his abilities by now, rather than just create nuisances and obstructions.
St. John absolutely relishes his powers. Usually, when he's using them, there's just the biggest smile on his face. A tremendous show-off, he likes to add some flair to his abilities. Rather than simply hurl fireballs at his opponents, his flames will often manifest as creatures, such as monsters, horses, dragons, ghouls, giant hands, etc. It's worth noting because it lends some insight into his personality: this points to a love of his abilities (he's clearly spent time honing them so that he can create unique apparitions), a desire to show off and be the center of attention, and a creative streak. Many times that he uses his abilities, he favors style over substance, going for big, showy moments rather than utilizing tactical thinking and actually neutralizing his opponents. Everything's a game to Pyro, including fights.
St. John can be pretty aggressive. He enjoys a good fight, and he won't shy away from it when confronted, even if he does restrain his abilities enough not to roast people alive. His pride in his abilities makes him arrogant, and he believes he's untouchable while he's got access to fire. Unfortunately, the second they're cut off, he's all but useless, and he'll usually stand around looking confused until he's beaten up, indicating that he's not all that well-versed in fisticuffs. It's worth noting, though, that he doesn't run away when he's about to lose a fight, so there's some bravery to him... or it's just the result of self-delusion. Either or.
Pyro's capable of doing good if it suits him. Like most of the Brotherhood and Acolytes, he's more neutral than evil; a selfish opportunist rather than a genuine villain. Which isn't to say that St. John is simply misunderstood-- unlike the Brotherhood characters, there's no indication that he comes from a rough background and acts out due to a lack of opportunity to do anything better. St. John chose his path; he's intelligent enough to know what he's doing is wrong, and he chooses to do it anyway simply because, well, he wants to.
Why do you think your character would work in this setting? He largely accepted Eli's offer for two reasons: he's a wanted terrorist in his world and doesn't really want to deal with the consequences of that, and he's bored out of his mind since the Acolytes temporarily split up. HE NEEDS SOMETHING TO DO. Settling on an alien planet for 6 months sounds pretty awesome, and he's expecting it to be super adventurous, which, given the calamities that happen in New Dodge, isn't far off the mark.
What will your character do for work? English teacher. He's a vaguely talented writer, and he enjoys literature, and nobody else is teaching English (to my knowledge), so he might as well do it. Even though he's like... 19. IT'LL BE A LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR ALL.
Inventory: His Pyro getup, complete with a flamethrower, a ton of lighters and matches and lighter fluid, regular civvie clothes, books, books, books, notebooks full of terrible fiction, a laptop full of terrible fiction, and that's about it. Nothing special. Except for the flamethrower.
Samples: And now for the hard part! If you need a prompt for your samples, refer back to the Applications Page.
Third-Person Sample: Test Drive Meme.
First-Person Sample: TLV intro. Pyro is a serious writer.
